Saltwater Sessions App
Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026
This Privacy Policy describes how the Saltwater Sessions app ("the App"), developed by Jimmy Shoals, handles information on your device. We are committed to protecting your privacy.
Information We Collect
The App has no user accounts and never asks for your name, email address, or any personally identifying information. It does not access your contacts, your photos (other than a single image you may explicitly pick as a playlist cover), or your precise location. The only information that ever leaves your device is the anonymous playback statistics described below and — only if you choose to use them — the optional playlist cover-art and casting features.
Anonymous Playback Statistics
To help Jimmy Shoals understand which songs are resonating, the App reports anonymous playback events to jimmyshoals.com. Each event contains only the track title, the album title, the action (such as play, pause, skip, or download), and a timestamp. These events are never tied to an account, your name, a device identifier, or your location, and they are never sold or shared with advertisers or any other third party. They are used solely as aggregate listening statistics.
Music Downloads
When you download tracks, the audio files are stored locally on your device in a private app directory. These files are never uploaded, shared, or transmitted to any third party. The App connects to jimmyshoals.com solely to fetch music files and check for updated versions of tracks you have already downloaded.
Device Permissions
The App requests the following permissions and uses them only for the stated purposes:
- Local Network (iOS) / Location & Nearby Wi-Fi Devices (Android) — Used exclusively to discover Sonos and Chromecast devices on your local Wi-Fi network. On iOS this is the system "Local Network" permission; on Android, scanning for nearby Wi-Fi devices requires the location permission. Your physical location is never read, recorded, or transmitted.
- Network access (Internet, Wi-Fi state) — Used to stream and download music and to communicate with Sonos speakers on your local network.
- Storage — Used to save downloaded audio files to your device for offline playback. On iOS these are kept automatically in the App's private container, so no external-storage access is requested.
- Audio / Foreground Service — Used to keep music playing when the app is in the background and to display playback controls on the lock screen and notification bar.
- Wake Lock — Used to prevent the device from sleeping during audio playback.
Sonos Integration
If you choose to use the Sonos speaker feature, the App communicates directly with Sonos devices on your local network using the Sonos UPnP/SOAP API. No data is sent to Sonos servers. All communication occurs entirely within your local network.
Chromecast / Google Cast
If you choose to use the Chromecast feature, the App uses Google's Cast SDK. When casting, your device communicates with your Chromecast device using Google's infrastructure. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy. The App does not transmit any additional personal data through this integration.
AirPlay (iOS)
On iOS you can play audio to AirPlay devices such as Apple TV or HomePod using Apple's standard system route picker. AirPlay routing is handled entirely by iOS; the App does not collect or transmit any data through this feature.
Playlist Cover Art
Playlists you create are stored on your device. You may optionally give a playlist a cover image. If you ask the App to generate one, it sends only the playlist's song titles to a server endpoint on jimmyshoals.com, which forwards them to Google's Imagen image-generation service to create the artwork; no personal information is included. If you instead choose your own image from your device, that image stays on your device and is not uploaded.
Third-Party Services
The App does not use analytics services, advertising networks, crash reporting services, or any other third-party data collection tools.
Children's Privacy
The App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to This Policy
If we update this Privacy Policy, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated date. Continued use of the App after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
