Marys Summer Sun

By Jimmy Shoals · The Saltwater Sessions: Postcards From The Quiet Hours

In the heartland where the stories unfold, A tale of dreams, some new and some old. The radio hums an old Willie tune, Mary hums along, in the early afternoon. Outside our place, Mary's face Shines in the soft summer sun. Still as a vision, She sits on the stair, Waitin' to get up and run. A street of dreams Lies at her feet, Spread 'cross the hot concrete. To future worlds And paths not taken, To a million girls And promises forsaken. A trickle of sweat Glistens on her brow, A sigh of life's regret In a long forgotten now. Echoes in the halls Cry out from the past, Haunting voice callin' — Come in, come on be free at last. So Mary turns to the road With dreams she has sowed, Gets ready to try, Ready to fly. Through a summer day's haze, A distant radio plays. Down the driveway To her brand new car — Mary knows she ain't goin' far. A trickle of sweat Glistens on her brow, A sigh of life's regret In a long forgotten now. Echoes in the halls Cry out from the past, Haunting voices calling — Come in, come on be free at last. She heads to dreams new, The town fades slowly in her rearview. And leaves behind pain that she once knew, Fading like memories and old scars — Mary's finally chasing her own bright stars.
