Painted Freedom

By Jimmy Shoals · The Saltwater Sessions: Midnight Offerings

She came down to the island, unsure and shy, With a suitcase full of doubts and dreams to try. Fantasy Fest calls, "Come shed your fear" — Body paint and feathers, a new skin appears. Torchlight flickers, shadows dance, worlds collide, She steps into the crowd, nowhere left to hide. Music pounding like a heartbeat, her nerves unwind, Paint is warm upon her skin, bright colors combine. In the mirror, she sees someone she's yet to meet, A wild reflection staring back — finally free. Painted freedom under moon's soft light, She dances in the downpour on a Key West night. Let the rain come down, take the colors, take the shame — She's never going back the same. At Captain Tony's, strangers lift a glass, She laughs unburdened as the moments drift past. Back home, she was hiding behind a desk nine to five — Mile Marker Zero is where she came alive. Painted freedom under moon's soft light, She dances in the downpour on a Key West night. Let the rain come down, take the colors, take the shame — She's never going back the same. Somewhere around midnight, the rain begins to fall, She lifts her face to it and doesn't mind at all. The paint runs down her shoulders, colors streak the street, And everything she feared dissolves beneath her feet. Painted freedom under moon's soft light, She dances in the downpour on a Key West night. Let the rain come down, take the colors, take the shame — She's never going back the same. The paint is gone, but the freedom stays, She'll carry Key West with her all her days. The girl who landed here so shy Went back home with painted skies.
