I sing alone in the twilight,
Remembering times from afar,
Old songs drifting in on the tide,
Like stories that shaped who we are.
I've sung in bars by the edge of the sea,
On island sands, just my guitar and me, -
Watched a thousand sunsets slip away,
With no map, no reason to stay, -
But the wind and the tide had their say,
Heard the ocean telling me to stay. -
I played for tips in roadside bars,
With a busted amp and a borrowed guitar, -
Played for sailors full of battle scars,
And sang my songs under the stars, -
From Gulf Coast docks to Caribbean seas,
So many stories found their way to me.
These are the songs the ocean gave me,
Carried on the salt and breeze,
Every harbor left a melody,
Every tide a memory.
If you ever sang along with me,
Under moonlight by the sea,
Then a piece of every melody
Belongs to you and me.
A bartender pouring one last round,
Old sailors singing the chorus loud, -
A girl in the crowd singing right along,
She sang every word like she'd lived that song, -
Somewhere between the salt and time,
Another story became a rhyme.
One day these hands will lay down the strings,
And the tide will take a few old things, -
I never knew where the wind might go,
Just chased the tide and the songs I know.
These are the songs the ocean gave me,
Carried on the salt and breeze,
Every harbor left a melody,
Every tide a memory.
If you ever sang along with me,
Under moonlight by the sea,
Then a piece of every melody
Belongs to you and me.
I have to say, it's been quite a ride,
We're all just old songs drifting on the tide, -
If the ocean ever brings me back this way,
I hope you'll all come hear me play.
