The Long Way Home

By Jimmy Shoals · This Town Is Full Of Ghosts

Your porch light's on — out at the edge of town. Cutting through the dark like it always does. I watched it in the rearview going down. Too proud to turn around — just because. Dashboard light on my knuckles. White lines fading in the dark. Radio hiss and a half sung chorus. Same two hearts, just off the mark. We said things we can't unsay. I let silence do the rest. Screen door swinging in the wind. Words still pounding in my chest. (ooooh) I took the long way home tonight. (aaaah) Let the white lines guide me home. Every mile's a borrowed minute. With nowhere left to roam. (ooooh) I'm not outrunning where I've been. Just letting the anger roll. Some roads don't lead somewhere new. They just bring you home. (aaaah) There's a younger me in the mirror. Window down on a summer bend. Vinyl seats and a burned-out speaker. Thinking this ride will never end. I called twice from the county line. Let it ring till it went cold. Funny how pride feels heavy. When the night gets old. Rearview's full of county lines. And the things I should've said. You were standing in the doorway. While I just shook my head. I've been strong for far too long. Like that's something I had to prove. Funny how the miles get shorter. When you've got nothing left to lose. (ooooh) I took the long way home tonight. (aaaah) Let the white lines guide me home. Every mile's a borrowed minute. With nowhere left to roam. (ooooh) I'm not outrunning where I've been. Just turning the wheel around. Some roads don't lead somewhere new. They just bring you home. (aaaah) Your porch light's on — out at the edge of town. Brighter now than it seemed before. I see it through the windshield slowing down. And I'm not driving past that door.
