We Were Loud Once (LIVE)

By Jimmy Shoals · This Town Is Full Of Ghosts - Live From Negril

Alright… alright now. Settle in… This one's about my buddy Rob. Known that man damn near my whole life… Back in the day, me and Rob had a system… well — we had speakers… Flea-market specials. Cheap as they come, sounded like hell — and we did not care one bit… 'Cause it was never about how it sounded. It was about how LOUD it got… Windows down, Saturday night, rolling King Street… hand to heart, that was church… And, uh… we still get together, me and the boys. Talk about those nights… Little grayer now. Little slower. And there's one chair don't get filled no more… So this one's for Rob. And it's for Gary — gone way too soon… out there somewhere tuning up that Mustang in the great beyond… Gary — this loud one's for you, brother… One, two… one two three four— Whoa-oh-oh-oh! We were loud once! My buddy Rob had an F-150, pawn-shop speakers in the doors, Saturday nights we'd roll down King Street and rattle half the stores. Windows down, the whole truck shaking, nowhere we had to be, Two young fools and one bad stereo… sounded damn good to me. We were loud once — big rock stars playing air guitars. We were bold once — no fear, fifth gear, chasing who we are. We were young once — long nights rolling into morning sun. Yeah, we were all that once… God, we had some fun. Yeah, we were loud once. Those old bands we loved in '92 — hell, I guess we're older too, these days a good night's eight hours sleep and waking next to you. Still get the boys together, still pour a little strong, and every now and then somebody plays that old song. We were loud once — big rock stars playing air guitars. We were bold once — no fear, fifth gear, chasing who we are. We were young once — long nights rolling into morning sun. Yeah, we were all that once… God, we had some fun. Yeah, we were loud once. Rob dropped by last night — known each other since we were ten, we sat out back and talked about remember when. One old story brought back the one that's gone, funny how the hurt gets softer as the years roll on. And that old song was playing loud. Rob reached across… and turned it down. We were loud once — hell, sometimes we still are. Give us one good song, one long night, we don't need to go that far. Life got quiet somewhere down the line… and honestly, that's fine — morning comes a little harder now, takes a few days to come around… but every now and then, for old times' sake — turn the damn thing up loud! Rob called me Tuesday… "You feeling any better?" "Nope." "Worth it?" "Damn right."
